Albon began with a single weighbridge on a block in Carrum Downs. Two trucks. Three people. One conviction: that the scrap industry — by reputation cash-bagged, opaque, unloved — could be operated like any other serious industrial business.
We grew the Carrum Downs yard steadily through the 2000s and 2010s. ARN accreditation came in 2011, then ISO 14001 in 2014, then the first LME-indexed forward contract with a Victorian foundry in 2017. By 2018 we'd opened the Yarragon branch to serve Gippsland properly. Today: 60,000+ tonnes a year across both branches, 90 people on payroll, and the same original weighbridge — recalibrated, still on the bridge at Carrum Downs.
— Founder & Managing Director, Albon Metals & Recycling
The milestones that took us from one yard in Carrum Downs to a two-branch operation handling 60,000+ tonnes a year. Nothing fabricated, no marketing rounding.
The founders open a yard on Aster Avenue, Carrum Downs. Trades exclusively in ferrous scrap from local fabricators, panel-beaters and metro fleet operators.
Granted EPA Victoria licence for industrial waste handling. Scope expands to non-ferrous metals, batteries and end-of-life vehicles under permit.
Becomes a fully accredited Auto Recycler under the Auto Recyclers Network of Australia. VicRoads disposal notices issued same day from the yard.
Achieves ISO 14001 environmental and ISO 9001 quality certifications. Audited annually by SAI Global across both operational disciplines.
Signs 24-month LME-indexed forward contract with a Victorian foundry. Trade Desk formally established at the Carrum Downs HQ.
Second branch opens at 8–10 Industrial Court, Yarragon — purpose-built to serve Gippsland (Warragul, Moe, Morwell, Traralgon) without forcing locals to truck their metal to Melbourne.
Launches digital weighbridge ticketing across both branches — depositors receive tickets and settlement notices via email and SMS in real time.
Combined annual throughput surpasses 60,000 tonnes for the first time. Yarragon branch handles a record 22,000 tonnes from Latrobe Valley operators.
Trade Desk expands container-load export programme through the Port of Melbourne. Spec-matched ISRI deliveries to mills across Asia and the subcontinent.
Industries that handle waste have a long memory and a short patience for spin. We've published our operating principles and audit against them quarterly.
Both weighbridges are independently calibrated to NMI standards every quarter. The number on the ticket is the number we paid against — never adjusted, never deducted in the back office.
From the gate-in photograph to the foundry delivery note, every load carries an unbroken chain of custody. We can show you where your metal ended up — to the day, to the mill.
EFT into your account within 48 hours of ticketing. No waiting until the end of the month, no "we'll get to it." If we miss it, we credit the delay.
Four people you can call. Two started on the weighbridge, one in the cab, one at the trade desk. None of them work from a corporate HQ — they work from the yards.
Started in a family fabrication shop. Founded Albon in 2005 with a single weighbridge in Carrum Downs. Still on-site three days a week.
Twenty years at major Australian steel mills, including InfraBuild and Liberty Primary. Joined 2017 to build the Trade Desk. Negotiates every forward contract personally.
Former plant engineer for a Geelong shredder operation. Runs both branches and the mobile demolition fleet. Based out of Yarragon three days a week.
Environmental scientist, BSc Monash. Owns ISO certifications, EPA Victoria compliance and the chain-of-custody platform across both branches.
Every licence, permit and certification we hold — current, in date, available on request. Documentation is a load-bearing part of the operation.
Environmental management system certified across both operational sites. Audited annually by SAI Global.
Quality management certification covering weighing, grading, ticketing and settlement processes.
Accredited member of the Auto Recyclers Network of Australia. VicRoads-notified vehicle disposal.
EPA Victoria Industrial Waste Permit covering both Carrum Downs and Yarragon sites.
Yard operators, weighbridge clerks, MC-licensed drivers, demolition crews, trade analysts. We hire people who want a trade and a future — not just a shift. Most of our team leads started on the gate.
